Deepak borkar ..recognised but undiscovered yet…
why I should talk about him?
I don’t know…but I feel…before I say good bye to this industry someday at least I must pay my gratitude to some of the stars of my industry …
Life is changing so fast that we are forgetting our own kids mobile numbers…who will remember the name of a musician who was sitting in the last row on the stage…we remember “once more songs”…we remember the shayri…we remember the singers and the anchor….but we never remember even the faces of musicians….
He was Born on 2nd September 1952 in a municipal hospital in a typical marathi lower middle class family .a joint family in ancestral Borkar House..Now 180 yr old..Still stands strong in dadar. His father was working in central railway. As a child he never thought that he may become a musician..but he had a keen attraction for it.Dadar khandke chawl was known for ganesh festival .Deepak use to stand there on the streets for hrs together listing Dhol, Tasha and local Bands. Unfortunately when he was in 9th standard, he lost his father. Having the responsibility of mother and 2 sisters, he had to quit education after matriculation.
He joined matunga railway workshop as a wireman. Then 3 years in Mahanagar telephone exchange and then 10 years in MSEB as a technical person. During this period he met the grandfather of Vijay Indurkar ,who use to make handmade instruments….Deepak saved rs 100/- and purchased 3 instruments(Cabasa,Miracus and Tambourine)from him. Then he started learning tabla from different Gurus like Shri Madhavrao Indorkar and Shri Yashvant Kerkar .After that he learnt drums from Mr.Lester Gudino. Appa Wadhavkars family was a second home for him. In 1976.his actual journey towards music started. He learnt percussions from his Gurus like Kawas Lord,Beni Satamkar and shri Narendra Vakil. .He got some shows of famous playback singer Jaywant Kulkarni. At the same time he pursued his hobby of collecting percussion instruments. Once he got an opportunity to do some shows on a Singapore cruise, which was known as Chidambaram cruise. He was aware that he is not going to get any remuneration for the show, but he was keen to go to Singapore.why?for a tour?no…That time Singapore dollar was just rs 4/-…..he went there and purchased 2 full bags of instruments..
all latest instruments..And this became a turning point in his life. When he came back to India..this news spread in the musical field like a virus…that “Deepak ke paas sab latest instruments hain.”
He was already playing in the shows of a famous singer Yashwant kulkarniji..Tremendous passion for playing different instruments…. and now a huge collection of latest instruments…music fraternity started noticing him and a new era started. He got many recordings of Marathi, Punjabi and Hindi films.
Along with live shows, he played the music of film Sanyasi of legendry MD Shankar Jaikishan ji He became an integral part of many Music Directors Live concerts like MD C. Ramachandra.
We all have lots of ups and a down in life .Deepak was not an exception. He recollects..Prashant all acoustic instruments are needed to be tuned time to time. When we go in a studio, first thing we do is…
we take out our instrument for some time…because..the natural tune of the instrument changes as per the atmosphere..Means when we go on a air-conditioned studio..the temperature is low. Hence we tune the instrument several time before we play. Once i got a chance to earn rs.2000/-.but my luck was not there with me. While i was trying to tune my Bengali Ektara some musician played the same tu
ne on keyboards. Arranger noticed it and said..wow ..this is sounding better..! Recording proceeded without me..And i was told to go home.. i lost that Rs.2000/-.when i needed it the most.
When asked about today’s music trend..he says..yes all are good..i like Areejeet sing and Shreya Ghoshal the most..
.there are some very good music directors too..but I feel bad when some people even don’t know the” SA” of music but still they are in demand.
He gives a tip of success..
“Whatever u do..Do it wholeheartedly..zhadu marne ka bhi kaam ho to aise karo ke log boke ..wah kya zhadu maara..you should be passionate for your work ..dont cheat yourself..dont cheat Music”
When asked about the feature of live music..he said …”when i was new to this industry..most of the people here were very insecure .most of them were not even interested to show there instrument to anyone. But i call all of them and share my experiences. But let me tell you… I am still learning.”
Such a humble living legend Deepak Borkar is..
He wants to share one most important thing that..whatever he is today ..the credit goes to Wadhavkar family, all his Gurus, fans and ..none other than his life partner ..Nutan…
